About Us

We’re a family owned and operated store. If you’ve been in, you’ve probably met one of us. My mom and I are there quite a bit, along with our two staff naturalists, Reenie and Cindy. Each of us are very knowledgeable about birds. My mom has a Biology B.A., and has had a passion for nature ever since college. I myself, on top of store webdesigner, am an ecology major. Reenie has loved the outdoors ever since childhood, when she'd tromp around in the woods exploring. Cindy has worked as a naturalist for some time, and currently works at Lake Maria State Park. Combined, our staff's experience and expertise make us your local birding experts.

Janice

Jan is the owner, and mom. She has a B.A. degree in Biology from Bemidji State University, where she acquired her passion for the outdoors and everything in it- especially the birds. She enjoys birding, drinking coffee while watching the feeders, canoeing, hiking, and camping. Before owning the store, she’s been a park director for Benton County, a naturalist for area parks, and an environmental educator at Camp Courage, among other endeavors. Ultimately, she’s the one to ask around here if you have a question about birds, or really, any other aspect of nature. Her favorite bird is the White Throated Sparrow.

Katy

I’m a college student attending the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. I’m majoring in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, and plan on dedicating my career to the preservation and conservation of the natural world. While on campus, I work as a natural history interpreter (mostly a tour guide) at the Bell Museum of Natural History. I recently began volunteering as an Educator at The Raptor Center. I'm also working on a directed research project involving bird-window collisions. I enjoy hiking, bird watching, web design (as I made this and other websites), working on my wildflower garden, paddling, volunteering, running the store, working with kids, and drinking chai tea. My favorite bird is the Indigo bunting, though I enjoy the song of the Wood Thrush far more.

Peanut

Alright, so Peanut may not be the most knowledgeable of staff, but she does do an excellent job picking up spilled seeds. And, perhaps she's not staff, persay, but more of a store resident. Peanut is our store rabbit, an agouti colored Holland Lop. While she's not busy jumping up on the bottom shelves, on top of boxes, or digging in the garden display, she's perfectly content to be held and petted by anyone willing (or able to catch her). Her favorite foods are apples, bananas, and peanuts, and she loves giving bunny kisses (licking your face) to anyone who gives her some.
