Hopper Feeders
Hopper feeders are one of the most versatile feeders that you can add to your yard. A hopper feeder is an excellent feeder to start off with, simply because it appeals to a wide variety of birds. Many birds, including feeder favorites like the Northern Cardinal and Rose-breasted Grosbeak, cannot sit at tube-style feeders, as many are too big for the perches, or prefer to feed facing their food. The ledge surrounding a hopper feeder is enough to make it usable for such birds, while still appealing to smaller species like chickadees and finches. With a large compartment to store the seed in, the feeder holds enough seed to not need refilling for several days. The roof on such feeders also helps to keep the seed dry in the event of a rain or snow storm.
Most models in the store include a steel mesh underneath the seed compartment and the ledge, which allows water/moisture to escape out the bottom while the seed stays in. This mesh can cut seed costs by keeping it fresher.
Hoppers can be hung from a shepherd's hook or from a tree, or mounted atop a wood or steel pole.
