April 2008

What are you up to tomorrow morning?

Legs need a good stretch? Join us for a bird walk on Saturday, April 26. We will meet at the Wild Bird Center at 8:30 in the morning and then carpool to Quarry Park. It will be a shorter walk than usual-about one hour. Rain or shine! Feel free to bring the kids!

Migration Continues

The spring migration marches slowly on. We are approximately 2 to 3 weeks behind normal. Usually by this time of year, the air is filled with the sounds and flight of birds. The cold weather has caused many of the birds to seek warmer areas, at least for now. Usually they will show up when the weather warms up, but if it stays cold, they may decide to nest elsewhere. Keep your fingers crossed!

Ever seen a white throated sparrow on an elevated platform feeder? I saw one yesterday-the first time in the 23 years I have lived at my house. They pass through each spring and fall, but until now have fed only on the ground. Seems to be another example of how birds adapt. Another first was seeing a dark eyed junco at my tube feeder!

Earth friendly: New additions and old favorites back in stock!

This past Tuesday was Earth Day. In celebration, we have added environmentally friendly products.

Did you know that fertilizers and herbicides can be harmful to birds? Protect your important backyard bird habitat by using Concern corn gluten fertilizer with weed prevention. Corn gluten and potassium sulfate are combined to provide a product that feeds your lawn, prevents weeds, and is totally harmless to birds, pets, and children. Safe enough that you could put your baby on your lawn as soon as the dust settles!

We also now carry Dr. Earth organic fertilizers and insect sprays. All ingredients are safe for birds, pets, and children. As an added bonus, runoff from these products does not harm aquatic life like traditional fertilizers and pesticides.

Feed the birds, support a local nature organization

Mark your calendars for May 18th. As the next in our series of benefit days, 10% of all sales will go to St. John's Arboretum. If you haven't been there, be sure to check it out-it is open to the public. It is a wonderful natural area with a plethora of birds and wildlife.

As always, be sure to keep checking up on www.wildbirdfeeding.net for more updates.
